Dear Parents and Second Graders,
At this time, we would like to welcome you to the wonderful world of Second Grade. Your child’s teacher this year is Mrs. Blough. No one is more excited than those of us in second grade, children and teachers alike! We look forward to a year of learning and happy times with your child.
Please remind your child of our most important rule. Each student has the right to a warm, quiet place to work and learn. We expect each child to help provide this environment with his or her good behavior. To help encourage good behavior, our building has adopted a Positive Behavior System. Verbal praise and extra classroom events will also be used.
Parents, you will be a significant teaching partner at home with your child as you praise their successes and support your child when help is needed. Parents will be notified with a phone call or a red note if your child is having difficulty following school expectations.
General Information
Reading Homework –
All second grade students have at least 20 minutes of assigned reading homework Monday through Thursday. They should be reading books at home throughout the week.
In addition to the assigned work students may choose to read their library books after assigned reading is complete. These books have library labels on them. Weekends are a great time for students to read their library books.
Research shows that frequent reading is the single most effective way to improve reading ability. Please encourage your child to read out loud to an adult for at least fifteen minutes every day. This will help your child to become a more fluent reader and increase reading skills needed for 2nd Grade.
After your child reads, remember to ask him/her who are the characters, what is the setting (time and place), and what is the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Of course you may take your child to the Public Library if your child needs even more books to read!
"Re-Do ” - It is very important that you go over all papers that are sent home with your child. Please make sure that your child corrects all "Re-Do” papers and return them the next day with a parent signature. Work from absences needs to be returned as soon as possible.
Social Studies and Science - Your child will switch weeks for Social Studies and Science.
Math -By the end of second grade your child should know all the addition and subtraction number facts through 20. You may wish to help your child learn these facts by using a set of Addition and Subtraction flash cards and perhaps computer games. Many parents like to keep an extra set of flashcards in their car for their children to practice.
Skip counting is also a very important skill 2nd graders need. By the end of 2nd grade your child needs to be able to skip count to 1,000 by 1’s, 10’s, and 100’s. He/she must be able to skip count to 100 by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s by the end of 2nd grade.
Homework Folders –Your child will need use the green pocket folder that is provided by the school so he/she can put completed papers and homework in to take back and forth every day. The children will use these folders to help organize their paperwork from the day. Please go over your child’s work each day to reinforce and review the concepts that we learn at school. Also empty these folders daily of all completed work and return them to school the following day with completed homework only.
Toys – Please do not allow your child to bring little toys and/or other distracting material to school. These items are not allowed in our room. This includes purses. Items of this type that are brought into the classroom will be taken away and placed in the "June Box.” These items will be returned on June.
Box Tops for Education– Save these labels from cereal boxes and Kleenex boxes and send them in anytime. They will be used for supplies for our whole school. Thanks!
Communication – It is important to your child’s education that we communicate when a need or question arises. The fastest form on communication is through my e-mail address; [email protected]. The best time to reach me is before school, or during our scheduled specials time. If you would like to talk to me in person or have a conference, please call ahead and I would be happy to schedule one.
This year, join me to make education an enjoyable experience for your child. With your cooperation, I can make this year a successful one for all of us. I am looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Blough
